The company HMD Global, which produces smartphones and push-button phones under the Nokia brand, loudly declared itself in 2017. However, the company was unable to cope with tough competition. At the end of the fourth quarter of 2020, the company occupied less than 1% of the smartphone market.

Therefore, Counterpoint Research’s free Q4 2020 report on the global smartphone market does not include the results of HMD Global, which makes Nokia smartphones. But at NokiaMob Counterpoint’s request, the company shared some details on the success of the Nokia brand.

HMD Global’s total mobile phone shipments increased 30% qoq in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to released data. While regular phone and smartphone shipments grew 26% and 35%, respectively, HMD Global managed to ship just 2.8 million Nokia smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2020, but shipped nearly 12.7 million Nokia phones during the same period.

Thus, in the fourth quarter of 2020, Nokia was the second largest mobile phone brand with a market share of 16%. At the same time, the company took 15th place in the smartphone segment with a market share of only 0.7%.
