Fux meets with former Ministers of the Environment to discuss the environmental agenda at the STF

The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Luiz Fux, receives, this Wednesday (23), former ministers of the Environment from several governments to discuss actions related to the environmental agenda that are on the Court’s agenda.

Former ministers Carlos Minc (minister from 2008 to 2010), Edson Duarte (minister from 2018 to 2019), Gustavo Krause (minister from 1995 to 1999), Izabella Teixeira (minister from 2010 to 2016), José Carlos Carvalho (minister from 2002 to 2003), José Goldemberg (minister in 1992), José Sarney Filho (minister from 2016 to 2018), Marina Silva (minister from 2003 to 2008) and Rubens Ricupero (minister from 1993 to 1994).

In a letter sent to the STF last week asking for a hearing, the group states that the purpose of the meeting is “to present some reflections and proposals that will certainly help Brazil to overcome the extremely serious and vexing situation of destruction of the Amazon, and increase of violence and neglect against indigenous peoples and other traditional communities that live in the forest”.

The Supreme Court will analyze next Wednesday (30) a series of proposals related to the environmental agenda.

Actions that question the role of the federal government in the fight against deforestation in the Amazon are on the agenda, against government acts that authorize the Armed Forces to act in the fight against environmental crimes and fires, against the decree that excludes civil society from the deliberative council. the National Environment Fund (FNMA), among others.

Minister Cármen Lúcia is the rapporteur for most of the actions. Earlier this month, the magistrate received in her office a group of artists led by Caetano Veloso to discuss the matter.

“We believe that a dialogue with you. [ministro Luiz Fux] configures a fundamental step in the quest to recognize the important role of this Supreme Court in repositioning Brazil on the path it had been following, in total alignment with the values ​​and ideals that move most civilized nations, that is, the integration of the economy with ecology, the promotion of the dignity of indigenous peoples and communities that are guardians of biodiversity and the fight for the planet’s climate health”, declared the former Ministers of the Environment.
