The decision of the European Commission to create a fund, with a total budget of 500 million euros, to support European farmers, was announced by the Minister of Rural Development and Food, George Georgantas in the 9-member delegation of the Panhellenic Committee of Blocs, in a meeting between them.
In our country, as mentioned by Mr. Georgantas, correspond to 26.3 million euros, while in countries such as Belgium the same amount amounts to 6.2 million euros.
He added that the decision gives each member state the right to double the amount corresponding to it using national resources, noting that “by itself it does not meet the needs that exist, but we have a basis”.
“This is an important first step that demonstrates that the European Commission understands the need to support the agricultural sector,” he said.
He pointed out that during the EU Council of Agriculture Ministers to be held next Monday, the Greek side will ask for a further increase in the amount “so that we can really support the farmers in a difficult period”.
Mr. Georgantas announced that only for this year, it is possible to cultivate the areas that are in fallow, without losing the subsidy of “greening”.
For their part, the farmers submitted a memorandum with their requests, while asking for the details of this fund to be disclosed as soon as possible.
