G. Georgantas: Extraordinary aid and institutional interventions are coming for the primary sector

“Extraordinary aid and institutional interventions that will concern the primary sector, the government is preparing to greatly strengthen the people who keep the region alive”. This was reported by the Minister of Rural Development Giorgos Georgantas from Anogeia speaking to APE-MBE, while expressing his confidence in the breeders of Crete.

The minister met at the Shepherd’s Place in Anogeia with breeders and representatives of their trade unions, informing them of the government’s plans. “I took note of everything that the breeders of Anogeia asked me and my communication with them was a great opportunity after my presence today at the events for the holocaust by the Nazi troops”, said the minister and added: “Based on my portfolio in Ministry of Rural Development, it is a special moment and the reasons that I am here today in Anogeia to listen to the problems of the farmers and to inform them about the planning that the government is doing to support the primary sector”.

According to the minister, there will be extraordinary aid as previously announced, but also institutional interventions that will be the most important, so that in a medium and long-term environment the primary sector and the people who keep the region alive will be helped. For this reason, as the minister told APE-MPE, the Committee for the mountainous regions of the country has been established. “In the mountainous areas, as a rule, livelihood is made from animal husbandry. The Commission will help to make the institutional interventions in all fields and with the participation of all the relevant ministries to be able to have, where necessary, legislation and legislative interventions, in order to facilitate the lives of citizens. Interventions to create and strengthen infrastructure, but also in other interventions, which will make it possible and easier for people to live in the mountainous areas, as well as their professional activity”.

In this Committee, which will soon acquire a more institutional character as Mr. Georgantas said, the mayor of Anogion Sokratis Kefalogiannis, who is the president of the Mountain Municipalities of Greece, also participates. “In the next period of time I am convinced that we will be able to help a lot, all the mountain municipalities. I have to say that the Municipality of Anogeia makes very good use of the Leader programs that we have and which enable interventions in both the private and the public sector with specific projects. We have doubled the initial amount and of course once there is interest, for public and private projects, there is an intention from the ministry to further increase the budget, as we do in many municipalities in the country when we realize that there is the interest and there is also the necessary activity”.

The specific programs, he told APE-MPE, can really help to create specific targeted and other actions and I think, said Mr. Georgantas: “… that already in many municipalities of Crete, but also here in Anogeia, it is being taken advantage of”.

The breeders expressed their confidence in Mr. Georgandas because, as they pointed out, he has fully understood the issues that concern them and pose risks to the sustainability of their livestock, such as fuel prices, energy and feed prices . “He is a man who comes from a farming family and the proposals he submits, the way he communicates with us and the solutions he proposes, give hope in the difficult days we are going through”, the livestock farmers of Anogeia told APE-MPE.
