G. Georgantas: ‘There is no question of food adequacy’

“No worries”, stressed in his statements from Ioannina, the Minister of Rural Development and Food George Georgantas, while expressing optimism that “in the next period we will have a balance in prices”.

The minister pointed out that the products produced by Greek farmers are normally on store shelves, but the supply chain from abroad has not stopped operating all this time and even with alternative markets, which were quickly found to cover the any products our country has imported from Russia and Ukraine.

“You know very well, in soft wheat and maize which are the two products that we imported in large quantities, already Bulgaria, Germany, Hungary, Romania, send shipments which cover and in fact very satisfactorily any needs that existed” Mr. Georgantas emphasized characteristically.

He even said that he has constant communication, daily, with the Association of Importers but also with the flour manufacturers, who are absolutely reassuring, “precisely because the supply chain is operating normally”

The Minister of Rural Development and Food, acknowledged that there is “an issue with prices”, as a result of the energy crisis that preceded, as he stated, while expressing the belief “that in the near future, there will be a balance in this sector, as the government tries to help in two directions “:

“Firstly, our farmers to be able to produce and secondly, our vulnerable fellow citizens, who are supported in various ways by the government. The measures of more than 1 billion euros announced 15 days ago, concern about 3 million of our fellow citizens , said the minister and continued:

At the level of farmers, aid measures amounting to EUR 200 million have been announced and are being implemented, and what remains to be done to implement these measures is the payment of aid for the feed market, which initially started with an estimate of EUR 30 million. However, we changed the method of calculation, in order to support more breeders, and it is over 45 million that will eventually be given based on the turnover of the whole of 2021 and not a 6-month period which created some feelings of injustice to some of the breeders.

In the coming period, and given that from the crisis reserve of the European Commission, 26 million have already been allocated to our country, we are looking for a way to further help our farmers. The way and the field have not been decided yet, but we are above the problem, we are monitoring it and we really invite them to produce their very good quality products, strengthening the local economy “.

The minister said that next Monday, he will be in Evros in order to see the checkpoint at the Kipi station, but at the same time to meet farmers, who grow sunflower, which is very important at this time for the production of sunflower oil.

Mr. Georgantas, inaugurated at noon the Milk Quality Research Unit, which operates at the facilities of ELGO-Dimitra, in Katsikas, Ioannina. During his greeting, among other things, he underlined that our country “has nothing to fear” at this difficult time if it regains its productive potential. As Greece said, it has many productive potentials, which must be strengthened, “the primary sector must exhaust the possibilities that are provided and are very many, so that we can face this difficult period and the future with optimism”.
