Three years later – due to pandemic restrictions – the FoodExpo exhibition is back with 1,200 exhibitors from 31 countries. “With specific measures, the government and the Ministry of Rural Development will continue to support producers, processors and exporters of Greek products, because that way we support the Greek economy and keep the Greek region alive,” said Minister of Rural Development and Food George Georgantas, inaugurating the exhibition. As he pointed out, the data and priorities in the primary are changing due to the effects of the climate, energy and health crisis, but also the war in Ukraine.
Mr. Georgantas reiterated that Greece does not face a food problem and referred to the cooperation that exists with all sectors of the field to activate alternative markets to ensure the products that Greece has so far imported from the countries involved in the war.
“We take measures and ensure in every way the adequacy of goods in the market by filling the supply gap in specific products from Ukraine and Russia, respectively taking care of our own exports to alternative destinations. We are well aware that without farmers there is no production and without production no “We support the primary sector and the companies in the sector and we consider it a critical factor in the economic development of the country,” said the Minister of Rural Development and Food, adding that his goal is to create a new production model.
To support the producers in dealing with the consequences of the crisis, Mr. Georgantas reminded that the government has allocated 180 million euros so far, while emphasizing the fact that the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made a special reference to the need to support farmers and additional measures to be announced in the coming days.
Mr. Georgantas made special reference to the success of Greece to have for the second consecutive year (2020 & 2021) a positive trade balance in agricultural products (approximately half a billion euros), which, as he stressed, is a result of the serious and responsible work done in this sector, from producers, processing and export companies, always aiming to promote our products in international markets. He added that the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure will stand by the producers, processors and exporters for the utilization of every financial tool available from the new CAP, in order to strengthen the primary sector and exports.
Mr. Georgantas inaugurated the exhibition and then was given a tour of the stands by the president of FoodExpo Mr. Flegg and the vice president Mr. Gialouris, accompanied by the vice president of the Union of Regional Governors, the governor of Attica, George Patoulis.
