G. Hantzinikolaou: The agri-food sector is called to play a leading role

The support of the agri-food sector as a pillar of development of the national economy and in particular the high added value of the predominantly national product, olive oil was highlighted in the event co-organized by Piraeus Bank and the Peloponnese Region at the Museum of Olive and Greek Olive Oil. on Wednesday 29 June 2022.

“The agri-food sector is called to play a leading role, as an important pillar for the sustainable development of the Greek economy. To make this goal a reality, we must meet four major challenges: creating synergies through cooperation, adoption methods of intelligent or digital agriculture, the growth of the rural clergy and the age renewal of human resources “, pointed out the President of Piraeus Bank, Mr. George Hantzinikolaou.

The Governor of Peloponnese, Mr. Panagiotis Nikas, thanked Piraeus Bank for its cooperation and pioneering actions, adding that “It is an example of private initiative, an example of behavior for the general upgrading of our society”, while referring to the issues of the primary sector abandonment of the countryside, emphasizing the need for a serious land policy, in essence support for the rural world, protection of the agricultural product, but also education ”.

On the occasion of the publication: “The agricultural sector in Greece: 200 years of history Challenges & prospects”, the Professor of the Agricultural University of Athens and President of ELGO DIMITRA Mr. Serkos Haroutounian, under whose supervision the study was prepared, presented the challenges and proposals for the future of the Greek agri-food sector. Researchers at the Agricultural University of Athens Dimitris Panagiotopoulos and Eleftherios Nellas referred to the contribution of the Revolution of 1821 to the development of agriculture and olive oil in the national economy, respectively.

Extensive reference to the financial support of the agri-food sector was made by the General Manager of Agricultural Banking of Piraeus Bank Mr. Alkiviadis Alexandrou, who, among other things, stood by the fact that: a more appropriate combination of solutions aiming entirely at the operational, but also the investment needs of farmers and cooperatives, with the aim of creating sustainable and profitable businesses “.

The event ended with a constructive discussion, coordinated by the Deputy Regional Governor of the Peloponnese in charge of primary sector issues, Mr. Stathis Anastasopoulos, with the participation of local actors. In this context, the importance of olive growing was highlighted at a time when both the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, highlight the importance of the primary sector in development, but also in ensuring the nutritional adequacy of the country.
