G. Koumoutsakos: Next year will be very important for us to achieve greater European cohesion

New Democracy MP B1 North Athens and former minister George Koumoutsakos in an interview with SKAI 100.3 radio station, in the show “Diary” with Pavlos Tsimas, spoke on the issue of the war in Ukraine.

Mr. Koumoutsakos stated that “in one week the post-Cold War world changed, the geostrategic data of balances in Europe and around the world changed”.

He pointed out that the excessive Russian invasion of Ukraine under international law, led to the transformation of the European Union from a “political dwarf”, as some called it, into a solid international player.

On the issue of Turkey’s stance, Mr. Koumoutsakos underlines that it will have an interesting positive impact on “ours.” In recent days, he seems to have adopted the Kremlin’s initial designation of a “special military mission” to avoid a legal push to close the Straits. “Turkey’s statement that it respects and implements the Montreux Treaty has a positive aspect. Because this treaty provides and allows the rearmament of the Straits and the islands that are geographically connected as a continuation of the Straits. That is, of our own islands in the northeastern Aegean “, Mr. Koumoutsakos pointed out.

He also stressed that the West’s reaction to Putin’s revisionism works – at this stage – to inhibit Turkey’s expression of revisionism, but does not invalidate it.

“It is suspended, but it is not abandoned”, stressed Mr. Koumoutsakos.

Finally, regarding the next moves of the European Union, he stated: “Europe is facing five challenges at the same time: health, economic, geopolitical, refugee due to the wave from the war-torn Ukraine and the side effects on energy. At the same time, it is in The debate on the ‘Future of Europe’ is evolving, and it is certain that the latest developments will greatly influence this process of determining its future.

Europe needs to move faster with coherent or common defense, foreign, economic and energy policies. And I wonder, if not now, then when? ”

Next year will be very important for us to achieve greater European cohesion, underlined Mr. Koumoutsakos.
