G. Koumoutsakos: Tactics of escalating tension from Turkey

Discussion on the crucial issue of Greek-Turkish relations entitled: Turkish Revision – Greek Patriotism took place in the atrium of the town hall of Kifissia with the participation of the New Democracy MP and former Minister of Immigration and Asylum Mr. George Koumoutsakos and former Prime Minister National Defense Mr. Alkiviadis Stefani.

The two speakers analyzed Greek-Turkish relations, with special references to specific events through their long experience in the field, one from the position of diplomat and the other from the position of officer.

The event was prefaced and welcomed by the Mayor of Kifissia Mr. George Thomakos.

Among others, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Petros Molyviatis, the former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Theodoros Kasimis, deputy regional governors, generals of the security forces and citizens who participated with important interventions were present.

During his speech, George Koumoutsakos referred to the tactics of escalating tension from Turkey, especially in the last year and a half. He referred to the steps of escalation that began with the relentless demand for the demilitarization of the Greek islands. In the second step, Ankara committed massive violations of Greek airspace. Turkey then personified the crisis by attacking the Prime Minister of Greece and its Ministers. In the fourth stage, he tried to “demonize” the country by falsely claiming that he was “training terrorists, drowning immigrants and arming himself in order to attack Turkey.”

At the same time, it is conducting a major military exercise used as a step to launch accusations and intimidation against Greece, with references to the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor catastrophe, while the Turkish President writes a message in Greek, on one of the most popular social media, in order to to send a message of accusation and intimidation directly to the Greek people.

Regarding the request for demilitarization of the islands, George Koumoutsakos also referred to a brief dialogue he had with the Turkish ambassador to Greece when he asked him “But finally, what are you doing? What is it that you submitted to the UN? Where are you going?” The answer he got was “There are times when we have to throw a big rock in a lake in order to shake the water”.

For his part, Alkiviadis Stefanis spoke about a geopolitical environment full of challenges, such as the rise of reformist forces, war conflicts, refugee and immigration currents, religious fundamentalism, terrorism, cyber-attacks and many more.

Mr. Stefanis stressed that “Turkey is coming as the heir of the Ottoman Empire to present a grandiose military plan at symbolic time milestones.”

Mr. Stefanis underlined that “the second milestone concerns the six hundred years since the fall of Constantinople. “At the same time, it envisions the development of the Turkish war industry to such a level that it is among the first places in the world rankings.”

The former Deputy Minister of National Defense said he was confident of the fighting spirit, the excellent preparation and the high morale of the Greek Armed Forces, which are a strong, effective deterrent to Turkish revisionism.

He stressed, finally, that national solidarity is the most important factor of national power of our country against any threat.

The discussion was moderated by the Journalist, Mrs. Alexia Koulouri.
