G. Oikonomou: Greece cannot and should not sink into a political crisis at the most critical time

“Throughout his political career, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stands out for his adherence to institutionality and the consistency of words and actions which are the basic conditions of a modern democracy”, emphasized the government representative, Yiannis Oikonomou, starting the briefing for the political editors. “During his term as prime minister, he proved in the midst of huge crises that the compass of his policy is stability so that Greek citizens and foreign investors are confident and can plan their lives and their actions without surprises”, he emphasized.

He emphasized that with these political principles, the prime minister, from the first moment that early elections began to be talked about, made it clear that the government would exhaust its constitutionally mandated term.

He accused SYRIZA of old partisanship and opportunism, spoke of intense toxicity and assured that “the government is not going to play on the board of tension, polarization and division”.

He referred to what the Prime Minister also said in the Parliament last week about the fact that the elections will be held at the end of the four years and that his decision is based both on reasons of institutional order and political stability in a Europe that knows and will know the in the next period, unprecedented shocks as long as the successive international crises last. “Much more so when we have in front of us the bomb of simple proportionality. A bomb that SYRIZA planted on the foundations of stability and normality while he himself in the past held elections and came to power with the system of enhanced proportionality”, he added.

Political and historical time in the era we live in, he said, is completely compressed. “It is measured in minutes, not days or weeks. Any inaction can be fatal.”

He emphasized that “Greece cannot and should not be plunged into a political crisis at the most critical time” and referred to the Prime Minister’s words in his recent interview that he is willing to bear the political cost in order to ensure stability.

He said that the government is continuing the reforms and specifically mentioned three of them starting with the “New Horizons in Universities” bill through which he said a major reform is being promoted. He talked about strengthening the functionality and efficiency in the universities with a new management model, by establishing development tools for the upgrading of the HEIs and by modernizing the operating framework of the special research fund accounts.

He then referred to the reform concerning medically assisted reproduction, speaking of an important intervention in the direction of social progress. “This is a bill with a strong social character”, as the Prime Minister emphasized, which modernizes the existing framework and provides solutions to problems that plagued many women.

He also referred to the reform concerning the “Mitos” National Register of Procedures, which is a new digital procedure that is made available to citizens in a pilot phase with the aim of its full implementation by the end of the year.

Closing his introductory presentation, he referred to the fires and the course of dealing with them to date.
