G. Oikonomou on the Androulakis case: If the Prime Minister had known, it would not have happened

The government representative Yiannis Oikonomou spoke to the SKAI TV station about the case of monitoring the mobile phone of PASOK president Nikos Androulakis, who emphasized that the government will not allow any shadow to remain.

Starting with what the prime minister is going to say in his statement about it, Mr. Economou said that “he will go into great detail about this serious case and describe how the government approaches the issue and how it intends to deal with it .”

Regarding the way the case will be handled, he said: “We are in favor of the Commission of Inquiry. This is an extremely serious case and must be clarified. We do not want any shadow to be left behind. We had an event that is politically intolerable. It is not normal in a democracy to have an MEP’s mobile phone monitored by national security authorities.”

He emphasized, in fact, that “if the prime minister had been made aware of this, this would not have happened. That is why the commander of the EYP was removed and political responsibility was assumed.”

In order to clarify some things, as “a lot is heard and said in this case that leads to more confusion”, Mr. Economou explained that these are two different cases.

“We have a legal connection at the request of a prosecutor through the institutional framework that the National Intelligence Service operates for the phone of a politician, namely Mr. Androulakis, during the period when he was an MEP and a candidate for the leadership of PASOK. This is done in the manner governed by the operation of the EYP over time, with the approval of the prosecutor. This case has absolutely nothing to do with the whole discussion of the previous period and with the first indictment of Mr. Androulakis about predator and malicious software.”

He pointed out that the confusion is deliberately caused by some. “The Greek government has neither procured nor any government authority is using this malware. We have to look to find out who is tracking Greek citizens with malware,” he said.

As for the attribution of responsibilities, he said that “the system has weaknesses and messes up and needs more filters, but let’s not reset everything. We are completely receptive to suggestions.”

Mr. Economou also clarified that “Mr. Dimitriadis didn’t know either, but out of political decency he resigned.”

Regarding the possible surveillance of other persons, the government representative said that “based on the information we have, the prime minister is not aware of any information about surveillance of political figures. The answers will be given institutionally. We will also make changes in the institutional framework. ”

Finally, he emphasized that “we will not allow an incident that is politically intolerable to leave any shadow”, while the procedures will start as soon as the Parliament opens.
