G. Oikonomou: The support of society results from the overall effect of government policy

In an international environment with huge open issues, “Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis continues the effort to strengthen the international position of Greece”, emphasized the government representative Yiannis Oikonomou, starting the briefing for the political editors. He referred to the first official visit he made to Qatar “a fact that indicates the special interest of both sides in further strengthening our bilateral relations especially in the current critical juncture of regional instability and energy crisis”.

He went on to say that the common will to deepen cooperation in the sector as well as in the fields of Tourism, infrastructure, agriculture, culture, sports and sciences was certified. He pointed out that emphasis was placed on the energy sector and on the systematization and strengthening of cooperation between the two countries, given the leadership position of Catarrh in natural gas production and the Greek government’s strategy for the diversification of energy sources and the country’s energy security.

He repeated what the prime minister said about our country being able to be Qatar’s bridge with Europe and an energy entry gate for the European market both through the Revythoussa station and through Alexandroupoli. He also emphasized that Greece is a reliable partner and a pillar of stability in the wider region.

Then Mr. Economou referred to gas price boom and the difficult period that begins. “After the outbreak of the pandemic and also the Russian invasion of Ukraine it was obvious that there would be serious impacts on both the supply chain and the energy market,” he explained. He also pointed out that as long as these two issues remain open the problems are magnified almost in the form of an avalanche as we are watching in Europe but also in the whole world.

He emphasized that the European citizens as a whole and of course the Greeks will be tested in the next period and that even the most positive scenario requires time that is measured in months and not in weeks.

The whole of Europe is entering a period of testing, he underlined and reiterated that the prime minister insists on the need for European solutions, while at the same time an even plan has been implemented to relieve society, especially the weakest and the middle class, which has already borne fruit by holding down prices of energy at levels considerably lower than most European countries.

He referred to the mood 1.9 billion euros in September to subsidize electricity bills in households and businesses.

He explained that the horizontal provision to all households concerns approximately 6 million benefits and reaches 639 euros per MWh and covers 94% of the increases for households while it is greater for the social tariff covering 100% of the increase.

He also analyzed the implementation of the measure for business and rural tariffs.

The support results from the overall effect created by the government’s policy, the government spokesman added, and referred to the country’s exit from the regime of enhanced supervision, the phenomenal rise in tourism, and the excess of public revenues compared to those that had been budgeted. .

He emphasized that it is of major importance that the government has managed to keep society afloat and also significantly strengthen the resilience of the Greek economy.

“Instability, disorder, internal turmoil, politically imprudent actions do not serve the common good of the country and citizens, they do not serve the interest of society,” he stressed.

He then referred to the decline in unemployment which fell in June to 12.1 from 12.5 in May and 15% from June 2021.

“Greece handles migration based on human rights, international conventions and the protection of our sovereign rights”

Subsequently, Mr. Economou referred to the new attempt to use immigration as a tool by the Turkish authorities and also the attitude of the official opposition.

“Recently, a new phase of the immigration crisis has developed as a hybrid attack on our country,” he said and emphasized that in a single day, last Thursday, more than 1,500 immigrants attempted to enter from the Evros River. “And it is extremely revealing the fact that the 38 migrants who were rescued by the Greek authorities after first passing to an island in the Evros river complain that they were forcibly taken there by the Turkish authorities. Like the fact that in the last few days 60 smugglers have been arrested and brought to Greek justice .

As usual, Greece handles the issue based on human rights, international conventions and the protection of our sovereign rights. “Greece respects people, but it is not politically naive either,” Mr. Oikonomou pointed out.

He also accused SYRIZA of taking public positions that do not correspond to reality and cause damage to Greece.
