G. Oikonomou: We are far from the scenario of planned power outages

Government representative Yannis Oikonomou gave an answer to the scenarios for planned power outages in other European countries such as Germany via SKAI.

“Such a possibility is not on the horizon at the moment, we have to monitor everything, but we stay away from this scenario because our country is supplied by another pipeline” assured the government representative.

“We have worked out scenarios in order not to reach such issues, we are in a much more advantageous position, we have taken our measures earlier, we have LNG warehouses, we also have a climate advantage,” explained Mr. Economou.

The government representative spoke again against the Commission’s plan to “scissors” the demand for natural gas. “It cannot provide a solution, but it will make the problem more intense in all countries, we with natural gas produce electricity. It is another way that Europe should look to deal with the energy issues arising from the Ukrainian ” he pointed out.

The government representative clarified that Athens’ position in Europe is to impose a ceiling on natural gas and to use money from the unused funds of the Development Fund to support citizens

Fires: “Very difficult summer”

Regarding the front of the fires, he noted that “we still have a long way to go, a very difficult summer”.

Regarding the fire in Penteli, he said that no one can rule out the possibility of arson. “There was no short circuit, there was no lightning… The state apparatus reacted in Penteli with a fire that ran at 113 km per hour at night in dense vegetation and buildings, the consequences could be nightmarish.”

“The police helped catalyze the evacuations, in the past we paid dearly for this” he commented, on the occasion of SYRIZA’s criticism that during the fire in Penteli there were more police than firefighters.

For Turkey: “We are alert”

Regarding Turkey, he said that it is a power that causes problems in the region, and has a clear revisionist orientation, completely away from international law and treaties.

“Greece is calmly presenting the very evidence of the Turkish side, the infamous maps, and our stance pays off both in Congress and in Europe. Our own deterrent capability is strengthened, we make it clear and known what is happening in our region.”

As Mr. Economou stated, the behavior of the Turks in international fora is different in their domestic audience. “We weigh that as well, but we don’t underestimate any challenge.” Open channels with Turkey exist, he clarified.

“We are alert, ready to react in a cool, effective way. We are always working on different scenarios, but things are going smoothly so far. We have made agreements with the great powers of the world, with the agreements with Italy and Egypt we have expanded the country’s territory in terms of regarding territorial waters, we are strengthening cooperation with the US and our deterrent power with the Rafale and F-35s, and these are what the other country is looking for,” he stressed.
