G. Papandreou: Greece must acquire its own plan and vision

Greece needs a democratic political plan today and to become the ruler of its destiny, stressed tonight from Chania, the former Prime Minister, George Papandreou, in his speech for the internal party elections for the emergence of a new leadership in KINAL.

Mr. Papandreou argued that today Greece does not have its own plan and vision, criticizing the governments of ND and SYRIZA.

“We must become masters of our own destiny. We must strongly defend our interests and play our part in Europe and the world,” he said.

In his speech, Mr. Papandreou referred in particular to Crete and the close ties of his family with the island, emphasizing that “in critical circumstances and moments, Crete is always a source of inspiration. The democratic tradition of the Cretans always inspires us.” He referred in particular to the loss of Sifi Valyrakis, calling on the government and the judiciary to clarify the case.

Referring to his decision to be a candidate for the leadership of KINAL, he stressed that his goal is to create a large democratic faction. He referred to Fofi Gennimata, emphasizing that she fought bravely to unite the faction, but also with her illness, saying that “we must keep this legacy alive”.

From Chania, Mr. Papandreou referred to the timeless values that, as he stressed, the democratic faction stands for and must return to the forefront, such as social justice, the blow to inequality, the deepening of democracy, the blow to a centralized state and the clientele. “We need to rebuild a great democratic faction, strong, dynamic, progressive, to upset the balances of inaction in our country and to give hope again to the democratic, progressive citizens,” he said.

Before Mr. Papandreou’s speech, a minute of silence was observed in memory of Fofi Gennimata.
