G. Papandreou (Social International): Violation of International Law by Russia Recognition of Independence of Ukrainian Provinces

Former Prime Minister George Papandreou has condemned the recognition by Putin of Lugansk and Donetsk. “Absolute respect for the sovereignty of states and their internationally recognized borders is essential. Therefore, any violation of Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders or the use of external forces to overthrow its democratically elected government is a violation of international law,” he said. after the end of the online meeting of the Bureau of the Socialist International.

Mr Papandreou noted that “the decision by the Russian government to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk regions as independent is a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, which is contrary to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.”

He spoke of actions that dangerously increase tensions in the region and could have catastrophic consequences for everyone. George Papandreou stressed that the situation in Ukraine is extremely critical and that “hostilities must be stopped immediately, the civilian population must be protected and a peaceful solution must be found on the basis of the Minsk Agreement adopted by the UN Security Council in 2015.”

He expressed concern that the crisis could lead to a war involving nuclear weapons. “It is absolutely necessary to intensify efforts to reduce armaments internationally, in the spirit of the joint declaration of the five nuclear powers made in early 2022.”
