G. Plakiotakis: We are in constant communication with our sailors in Ukraine

“We urge the security of our maritime transport, our seafarers and our ships, to immediately obey the general effort to consolidate peace and to refrain from acts of overthrow of sovereign states that turn Europe and the world around at times.” “The Greek government has unequivocally declared its faith in international law and its full support for the Ukrainian people, who have bravely resisted the invaders.”

This was stressed by the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Giannis Plakiotakis, speaking today in Parliament, underlining all the initiatives that YNANP has taken so far since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine.

In detail, Mr. Plakiotakis stated the following: “We monitor every relevant development and inform the Greek shipping community.

We record the presence and movements of ships under the Greek flag as well as Greek-owned ships with Greek sailors in Ukraine, Russia and the rest of the Black Sea,

We have issued and renewed, whenever necessary, instructions and recommendations to the Masters for the safety of ships and crews,

We are constantly in touch with the masters,

We have requested the intervention of our Consular Authorities for the release of a Greek ship that is blocked in a port near Odessa,

We responded immediately to the initiative of the French Presidency and requested the immediate convening of an extraordinary Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on the safety of navigation and seafarers in the Black Sea and Azov Seas.

“At the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy”, concluded Mr. Plakiotakis, “we are ready, in cooperation with the shipping companies, to provide every possible assistance to our sailors and ships”.
