Russia has not abandoned its plan for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine after recognizing the independence of the two breakaway regions in the east of the country, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday.
“All indications are that Russia continues to plan a full-scale offensive against Ukraine,” Stoltenberg told a news conference, according to Reuters.
As he stressed, Russia has invaded Ukraine since 2014 (when it annexed the Crimean peninsula), and now they see a new invasion.
“We continue to call on Russia to back down … it is never too late to prevent an attack,” he said, urging Moscow to choose the path of diplomacy.
At the same time, Stoltenberg stressed that the Alliance continues to monitor the ongoing challenges in the Donbas region and noted that NATO will continue to provide strong political support to Kiev.
The NATO leader added that NATO members will continue to do what is necessary to arm the Alliance against offensive moves, while stressing that already 100 fighter jets are in a state of “increased readiness”.
