G. Varoufakis: This European Union is not being reformed, it is being overthrown

The secretary of MERA sharply criticized the EU that “is made so that there is no democracy”, the government that “all it has to contribute to Greece is debt”, but also SYRIZA which is “the biggest helper of the oligarchy” , Yanis Varoufakis speaking last night at the party’s central pre-conference event in Trianon.

“The other Europe is not just possible, it is already here with MERA25. From the moment our governments turned parliaments into theaters, we take theaters and make them parliaments all over Europe,” Mr Varoufakis said. “They are doing everything possible to bring the oligarchy parties into power, so that there is no longer a political, democratic dimension in decision-making. The European Union is built so that there is no democracy,” he said, referring to 2015. “We had a great opportunity in 2015 to redesign as Europeans the architecture of a coin that was built so that they could not transfer serious pieces of wealth from the very few to the many.”

“This European Union is not being reformed, we must say it clearly now, it is being overthrown”, was the message of the secretary of MERA25, claiming that “things have changed in Greece as well, since we founded MERA25”. “Since August 2018 (the 3rd and especially the 4th memorandum of Mr. Tsipras) they have managed to turn the bankruptcy of the many into the profitability of the few. They extract wealth from the few, from the bankruptcy of the many”, he said and noted that the program of MERA25 concerns the “disadvantaged”.

“At the same time, only this government issues debt, the only thing that this government has to contribute to Greece is debt. They demand that Mr. Staikouras and Mr. Mitsotakis applaud them because they are borrowing,” he explained.

Earlier, the event was opened by Eleni Deligianni, a member of the Political Secretariat, who stressed that a new chapter is opening in the alliance of “slavery” and “emphasis” of society and that the role of MERA25 becomes more important and timely to break with the oligarchy.

Juliana Cheetah, secretary of the newly formed MERA25 Germany, also spoke at the event, stressing that only through the efforts of all of us can we create a truly united Europe, while Eric Edman, DiEM25 political director, emphasized that radicalization is the most important part of the future of our pan-European movement. “Only through a break with the European Union as it is today can we really change Europe,” said the movement’s political director.
