G20: Lavrov – Guterres meeting on the sidelines of the Summit

The Russian Foreign Minister had a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres Sergey Lavrovon the sidelines of the G20 summit being held in Bali, the Russian ministry announced.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova posted a photo of the two men sitting at a table in Bali, with the Russian flag and the UN flag. However, the ministry did not release details on the topic of the talks.

The meeting came just days before the agreement to export Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea, which was concluded in July, expired. It is due to expire on November 19 and Moscow has not yet announced whether it will extend its participation.

Lavrov told reporters today at the summit that the United Nations told him that they have written promises from the US and the EU that both will remove barriers to the export of Russian grain and fertilizers to world markets. Lavrov said he received assurances about this from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Russian grain and fertilizer are not a direct target of Western sanctions, but Moscow has complained for months that their exports have actually been curtailed because sanctions limit access to ports, credit and insurance.

Lavrov said Guterres was doing everything he could to ensure this would be considered under the Black Sea initiative signed in July, which allows Ukraine to resume grain shipments from its southern ports after months of being blocked by Russia. He also said he had received written promises from the US and the EU to implement the part of the deal dealing with Russian exports so that those who manage Russian cereals. If these promises are fulfilled, then all obstacles to the export of Russian grain and fertilizers will be removed, the Russian Foreign Minister stressed.

Lavrov also said that Western countries tried to “politicize” the joint statement of the G20 summit in Bali. In the draft statement of the G20 leaders, seen today by Reuters, and relayed by APE-MPE, it is stated that “most” members categorically condemn the war in Ukraine and underline that it makes the global economy fragile.

Lavrov also argued that Kyiv refuses to talk to Moscow and is putting forward unrealistic terms for peace.
