Representatives of the Group of 20 (G20) –composed of the world’s largest economies– meet this Tuesday (15) and Wednesday (16), in Bali, Indonesia.
This will be the first summit since the clash between Russia and Ukraine began on February 24. The expectation is that war will be one of the main topics of conversations between world leaders.
Despite not being part of the group, Ukraine was invited by the host nation to participate in the meeting. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will speak virtually on the first day of the summit.
In addition to the war, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is also expected to raise issues related to international economic instability and the rising cost of living, according to information from his government.
Other topics that should be on the agenda are commitments involving climate, food insecurity in the world and tensions over Taiwan, the South China Sea and North Korea.
Just this Monday (14), US President Joe Biden met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping for the first time since he was elected, in a face-to-face meeting in Bali.
After the conversation, Biden told reporters that he was “open and sincere” with Xi on the many issues on which Beijing and Washington disagree.
The Chinese leader made Taiwan’s situation clear as a “red line” for the relationship between his country and the US.
