G7 Summit brought good results in bilateral relations, evaluates professor

While the G7 spotlight was directed at the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, the Brazilian government advanced in commercial and diplomatic agreements that are unrelated to the war in Ukraine.

However, the Brazilian position on the conflict puts President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in increasingly delicate situations on agendas abroad, in the assessment of International Relations professor Denilde Holzhacker, from ESPM.

“Although the gains were not so positive from a multilateral point of view, from a bilateral point of view, the meeting was good for Brazil”, evaluated Denilde in an interview with CNN Radio. “The government managed to resume several important relations with Australia, there was a very positive signal from Japan regarding visas and contact was established again with India, which is a relevant partner for Brazil to build a coalition that is neither dominated nor by Europeans, not by Americans.”

Lula spoke directly with several world leaders during the G7 meeting, but the president of Ukraine was not one of them. In a press conference, Zelensky declared that the Brazilian is the one who must have been disappointed that the meeting did not take place. On the other hand, Lula replied that he made three times available in his schedule for the Ukrainian, who did not respond.

During a meeting with several leaders, including Zelensky, the Brazilian president again condemned the Russian violation of Ukrainian territory and demanded that the UN promote more meetings to discuss solutions to end the conflict.

“There is an even stronger perception that Brazil not only resists supporting NATO action, led by the United States, but that Brazil has implicit support for Russia,” said Denilde Holzhacker. “This puts Brazil further away from being an interlocutor in the search for a peaceful solution.”

Even so, the professor points out that the impact of the lack of a meeting between presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Volodymyr Zelensky reveals the importance of Brazil in the discussion.

“This poses a paradox for Brazil in that we are seen as relevant, but our position, which is still very resistant, will be something that the Brazilian government will have to deal with in the next meetings of multilateral organizations”, he considered.

Denilde Holzhacker also recalled that Brazil needs to maintain a position as neutral as possible whenever it is pressured in relation to the polarization between the United States and China.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has already traveled to both countries this year and Brazil has a strong economic dependence on the Chinese.
