G7 teleconference on Ukraine with Zelensky on Sunday

The leaders of the G7 countries will hold a teleconference on Sunday dedicated to the war in Ukraine, which will be attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a spokesman for German Chancellor Olaf Solz announced today.

“May 8 is a historic day that marks the end of World War II in Europe, which has sown terror, destruction and death in Europe,” Solt’s spokeswoman Christian Hoffman told a news conference. whereas because of the war in Ukraine “the coherence of the G7 is more important than ever”.

This year Germany has taken over the chairmanship of the Group of 7.

This G7 meeting, the third since the beginning of the year, will be dedicated “mainly to the situation in Ukraine,” Hoffmann noted.

US President Joe Biden had earlier this week called for a G7 summit to discuss further sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, but did not say when.

“We are always open to further sanctions,” the White House said in a statement on Wednesday, adding that Washington would discuss with G7 members “what to do and what not to do.”

The Group of 7 includes the seven richest countries in the world: Germany, Canada, the USA, France, Britain, Italy and Japan.
