G7 to the Taliban: Stop restricting women’s rights

The G7 foreign ministers said today that the Taliban’s growing restrictions on the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan are isolating the country.

“With these measures, the Taliban are further isolated from the international community,” said G7 foreign ministers and the European Union’s foreign policy chief.

In a joint statement issued by France, the G7 foreign ministers called on the Taliban to take urgent action to lift restrictions on women and girls and to respect their human rights.

The Taliban, which seized power in August, ordered women to wear the burqa in public on Saturday, another step towards their previous hardline rule.
