The G7 “will never recognize” the borders that Russia wants to impose by force with the war it is waging in Ukraine, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven most developed industrialized countries stressed today.
“We will never recognize the borders that Russia has tried to change with its military intervention,” the diplomats said in a statement issued at the end of their three-day summit in Wangels, northern Germany. Belarus “to stop facilitating Russia’s intervention and to respect its international commitments.”
They also pledged to strengthen Russia’s economic and political isolation, continue to supply weapons to Ukraine, and work to alleviate global food shortages caused by the war, according to Reuters.
Senior diplomats from Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the United States and the European Union have also pledged to continue their military and defense assistance for “as long as necessary”.
In a joint statement, they pledged to address “Russian misinformation” aimed at blaming the West for food supply problems around the world over economic sanctions against Moscow and called on China not to help Moscow and not to justify the war in Russia.
The key to putting more pressure on Russia is to ban or phase out the Russian oil market, with EU member states expected to reach an agreement next week on the issue, even if Hungary opposes it.
“We will step up our efforts to reduce and end our dependence on Russian energy supplies as soon as possible, based on the G7’s commitments to phase out or ban Russian coal and oil imports,” the statement said.
