Gabriele Mainetti and Claudio Santamaria at Vanity Fair Stories: “Welcome to blockbuster made in Italy”

Let yourself be with They called him Jeeg Robot six years ago, now we review them together in Freaks Out, the story, set in Rome in 1943, of four freak phenomena with strange powers.

Claudio Santamaria e Gabriele Mainetti tell from the stage of The Space Cinema Odeon the secrets of their new revolutionary film, an unconventional film, which has already reached the first record, that of the greatest number of digital effects (1400 to be exact).

An important film, which cost 12 million and 960 thousand euros, “Maybe a lot for a genre film”, explains Gabriele Mainetti, “but I’m careful and we couldn’t really spend less to do it this way, it’s just for what it gives”. And the efforts seem to have already paid off: the film is the third most viewed Italian film after they have reopened at the cinema.

After telling about the amazing makeup of his character, the hairy man, Claudio Santamaria retraces its cinematographic stages, often carried out in the history of Italian cinema, from The last Kiss a Criminal novel, passing through Paz! one of the first films shot digitally. And, if we talk about today’s cinema, we cannot but talk about platforms, so demonized: “It’s true, perhaps because they bring fewer people to the cinema, but there is no doubt that they have given us a shock, not to mention that the your series can also be seen from the other side of the world ».

Then the two friends (they have known each other for more than 26 years) talk about big dreams, about America and about superpowers: «I don’t know which one is mine», Gabriele Mainetti says, «but I think the best thing to achieve is serenity».

But serenity is not standing still: “In life as in art there is no standing still, either go forward or go back”, Claudio Santamaria intervenes who tells, with a funny gag, the audition he did for Freaks Out and the auditions he supported: “It’s important to keep feeling that fear of testing.”

And then they proudly speak of Italian cinema: «A country – let’s face it – full of genius».
