Gabriele Salvatores: “That’s why cinema will never die”

Gabriele Salvatores he couldn’t wait to go back to the theater with one of his films, and he does it with the brave Comedians (from 10 June in cinemas), taken from the homonymous text by Trevor Griffiths, with whom he had already measured himself in the theater in 1985 together with those who would later become great friends (the various Claudio Bisio, Paolo Rossi, Silvio Orlando, Claudio Bisio, Bebo Storti and Renato Sarti).

The journey is in the lives of six aspiring comedians who aspire to visibility: there are the brothers Marri (Ale and Franz), who don’t get along very well, Samuele (Marco Bonadei) and Walter (Gio Di Meo), ready for anything to turn, the gloomy Giulio (Giulio Pranno), the youngest and most confident of the company, and the pure Vincenzo (Michele Cacace). After a course with the teacher Bernie (Natalino Balasso) the six have the opportunity to perform in front of the famous Bernado Celli (Christian De Sica), who will have to choose one of them for a new TV show.

«This film is a little child of Covid», Salvatores tells us,« on the one hand because we shot in a single location, so it was easier to have everything under control, on the other because we are talking about comedy and comedy: in this period we need fun and laughs, if possible, intelligent. Salvatores after the Oscar for Mediterraneo he managed not to be overwhelmed by the success. “When I won the statuette I said to myself: this award is not a driving license that guarantees fame. That’s how I started doing things I didn’t know how to do, making very different films like South, Teeth O Nirvana and to try to manage this success feeling alive, because if you convince yourself that you know how to do something well and that you deserve it, you’re done. It also makes me strange when they call me maestro “, continues the director,”I don’t feel like a teacher, I’m still learning“. His next film is titled Casanova and sees Fabrizio Bentivoglio and Toni Servillo as interpreters.
