Gaia Spizzichino: «Normality is so cool»

«Normality is everything that doesn’t make the news, but it’s no less interesting for this, because it concerns the ways and lifestyles of the vast majority of people. On my Instagram profile I talk every day about apartments that are too small, with the drying rack that has now become a part of the family, outfits that are more comfortable than beautiful because heels and public transport don’t go particularly well together, hair dried upside down in the way it comes because yes has little time or dexterity. Nothing extraordinary, yet so little told».

Gaia Spizzichino, creator of the Instagram project Normalize Normal Homes she is a supporter of normality, which is so reassuring, so “true” and so neglected.

But what’s so good about normality?
« The normality of beauty has the fact that it is imperfect. It sits exactly at that midpoint between ambition and achievement. It doesn’t mean not being ambitious, it’s right to aim high, but it’s just as right to be aware of your limits without necessarily worrying about them and without comparing yourself to others. Among the many things, normality also has the beauty of being in excellent company, it is the rule, not the exception ».

How do we educate ourselves to normality?
«Fighting the culture of perfectionism and the desire to be hyper-performing at all costs. Giving the right value to ambition and results, teaching how to live with the ups and downs of life. Above all by stopping looking at others as a constant term of comparison, but focusing on one’s own path. The narrative on social media is by its nature filtered and artificial, we cannot and must not use them as a parameter for evaluating our lives”.

An example of what’s most cool about her?
«Cool in this precise historical moment is Harry Styles, cool is Gucci, cool is whatever goes
on Netflix, even an old RAI fiction. Today’s teenagers dressed up are extremely cool
like us in the 90s, too bad our performance was much worse. It’s a simpler world,
if someone on video teaches you how to do makeup».
