The iconic “Darwin Arch” off the island of Darwin in the archipelago collapsed Galapagos, as announced by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Environment.
The ministry said in a statement that “the Darwin Arch, the attractive natural bridge less than a mile from Darwin Island, the northernmost island in the Galapagos Archipelago, has collapsed. The event is a result of natural erosion. “
According to the Guardian, tourists on a diving boat witnessed the collapse on Monday, but no one was injured.

The arch is known as a diving spot for underwater encounters with sea turtles, whale sharks and dolphins.
The rock formation was named after the British scientist Charles Darwin, who visited the islands in 1835.
