Game of Thrones fans have been made to wait for news of their favorite show, but 2022 is turning out to be quite a year.
House of the Dragon, a Westeros-themed spin-off starring Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy, is due to premiere this fall, with fans eager to get their fill of the show set many years before the events shown in Game of Thrones. It isn’t quite the direct sequel they wished for, but having been majorly disappointed by the original show’s finale, it is a chance for them to enjoy their favorite fantasy setting again.
Before it could hit the screens, even bigger news broke for fans. Jon Snow is coming back; he’s the headline character of a proposed spin-off show. That will deeply satisfy fans who have had to make do with other digital media since the original show ended in 2019. Mind you, digital media based on Game of Thrones is so widespread they’ve been kept happy. They could have picked up the Telltale Games series of the same name, which pitched you into the Westeros saga, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Amongst the Cheeky Bingo Slingo games, fans can find Slingo Fire and Ice, which features imagery and sounds very much like Game of Thrones; the title even plays on the name of the book series. Fans could also try to conquer the Seven Kingdoms on the iOS and Android game Game of Thrones: Beyond The Wall. All were great for fans, but they weren’t the new show needed to scratch the itch left behind by that awful finale.
Now, not only is Kit Harrington poised to reprise his role as Jon Snow, but another star from the series has opened the door to a return. John Bradley, who played Snow’s close friend Samwell Tarly, told Digital Spy that he would be happy to read a script if the producers come knocking. “I tend to think about it,” he said. “I think we all left Game of Thrones thinking that we’d played these characters for so long, and they had such a life to them, we’d like to sort of check in with them and see how they’re getting on.” The show, which is only in the early stages, is certainly something Bradley would consider, even though he hasn’t been approached yet. “I haven’t spoken to anybody about the potential Jon Snow prequel, but if somebody wants to send a script my way, I’d be interested to read it,” he added.
There could also be a return for Gwendoline Christie, who played the popular Brienne of Tarth. She’s expressed an interest in a return, and when hearing the news of the new show, she said: “I think I would always be happy to revisit Brienne, but we will have to see. We will have to see.”
One star unlikely to return is Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke. Unlike the others, she’s had major film roles since Game of Thrones, including one in Last Christmas, and she recently admitted she’d parked the character for now. However, a return might not have been on the cards, given how the series ended for her character!
Whoever returns, one thing is certain: Game of Thrones fans are finally getting the redemption they deserve after the finale episode of the series. It certainly won’t be long before video games are not the only way they can revisit their favorite characters, places and themes from the show.
