«We are not wrong, certain men who see women as sexual objects are wrong and not as a being full of emotions, feelings and life behind it». The girl victim of gang violence in Palermo wrote this letter to the broadcast editor White Zonewhich aired last night on Network Four.
The 19-year-old from Palermo was raped by seven boys on the city waterfronton the night of July 7th. He told the carabinieri that he had met the boys in a club. After getting her drunk they took her to an abandoned construction site and raped her. Angelo Flores, head of the group, filmed everything with his smartphone.
The girl now lives in a protected community: «Many women are afraid to report out of shame, we shouldn’t be the ones to be ashamed but those who dare to touch us without our consent. I’ve read of girls who after what happened to me don’t want to go out anymore… but why deprive us of going out? Because we? It is the animals that should be deprived of it».
After the violence, the girl also suffered intimidation and criticism on social media and the web. “Sometimes we get scared by repercussions from relatives and friends of the rapists as happened to me, who was inundated with threats. If there was complete protection, many more women would be willing to report».
There is no possibility of re-education for the young woman. «I’ve heard of re-education for rapists, but how do you think about re-educating a person and letting them run again after they screw up a girl? Now, if someone tried to touch me, I would cry. I’m no longer capable of interacting with a man like that.”
«If there were more protection and a more incisive law, men themselves would think twice before doing such a thing. Very often for them it is a simple outlet, but if we were talking about life imprisonment or in any case many years in prison, they would think twice, actually 20, before touching a woman. Then only the maniacs would remain who, unfortunately being sick, don’t even care about the sentence …».
The young woman also talks about her private life. «Unfortunately, I faced a difficult life… but I have to go on, reluctantly, but I have to succeed. Not only because I want a better life but also for my mother, who, despite her being very sick and bedridden, always showed up with her smile. She never gave up after decades spent in a wheelchair ».
