US officials are in Cairo, Egypt, for ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas, White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Monday (8).
However, there are still gaps between the two sides of the conflict, according to Kirby.
“We have been working very, very hard. And there are still some gaps that remain in the positions on both sides, but we wouldn’t have sent a team there if we didn’t think we had a chance here,” he stressed.
“We are trying to close those gaps as best we can,” he added.
The spokesman said CIA Director Bill Burns and US Middle East envoy Brett McGurk were in Egypt meeting with Egyptian, Israeli and Jordanian officials.
Additionally, Kirby stressed that there will be “follow-up discussions” in the coming days.
