Garamendi (CEOE) rejects a state of alarm until May and asks to shorten deadlines so as not to damage the economy

The businessmen ask the Government to rethink its State of Alarm so as not to generate damage to the economy. Well in the terms that it establishes, well in the current schemes of aid to workers and companies, the framework should be modified, they believe. In any case, they warn, confidence in a recovery to help revive businesses and job security is threatened for a six-month horizon with restrictions on mobility.

The president of the CEOE, Antonio Garamendi, has rejected this Monday the proposal of a state of alarm until May. Businessman has warned of the damage it can do to the economy and has called for it to be done with shorter deadlines with parliamentary control. “I think we have to put shorter deadlines, with reviews, go to Parliament,” he stressed.

In its current design, the state of alarm would last six months, until next May 9. The reason for reforming the government’s approach is the damage it can cause to the confidence of citizens and of businessmen themselves that the prospects for economic recovery may be shorter.

“We can share the measures but not the deadlines, we think that this needs to be reviewed on a more regular basis (…) What do we do with Holy Week? Do we directly burden ourselves with lack of confidence because we raise this May deadline? I think it is a real outrage, “said Garamendi during his speech at the XXIII National Congress of Family Business.

The warning from the businessmen coincides with the PP proposal, which has conditioned its support for the state of alarm proposed by Sánchez to extend “a maximum of eight weeks” and arrive until before Christmas Eve, to “save the Christmas campaign “. It also includes “limiting mobility during the three bridges” that are coming (November 1, November 9 -only in Madrid- and December 6).

The Government, however, has refused to modify its approach which, according to the minister Carolina Darias, is designed with “objective, reasonable criteria and based on experts”. Extending the State of Alarm by six months leads employers to consider how useful the latest aid scheme will have to sustain the incomes of workers and companies, designed as a de-escalation towards normality and with a term until the next 31 December January. The income protection scheme in force since September 1 includes different types of ERTE that replace the old figure in the file due to regrowth. Now the justifications are for impediment, for limitations caused by health decisions and for belonging to a sector especially affected by the crisis. This last chapter includes those of companies that are linked by their value chain to a particularly affected sector.

Garamendi too has criticized the decision to allow municipalities to spend 15 billion surplus and he has asked that this money not be used “on sidewalks or to raise wages” but rather that it be used to remove taxes, such as the IBI, to shops, hotels and hotels. “The municipalities can lend a lot of hands,” he added.

European funds

On the use of European funds, Garamendi has said that requires “a profound change, a change in structure “so that there is no Plan E”.

Also has underlined the role to be played by “market unity“To overcome this crisis and make better use of funds. There are risks, he added, that these funds” are not used or are misused “with” short-term “projects that can provide employment but” precarious. ” .

The CEOE president, who has also warned of the risk of incurring in structural expenses, has added that the problem is no longer just labor and that more “temporary” economic measures will have to be taken to solve the problem that are coming with this second wave
