Experts from the analytical company Gartner summed up the results of the fourth quarter of 2020 and the year in general in the smartphone market. According to their calculations, 5.4% fewer smartphones were sold in the quarter than in the fourth quarter of 2019, and for the year as a whole – 12.5% less than in 2019.
Analysts note that the market contraction was minimized by sales of smartphones with 5G support and models belonging to the lower and middle segment. In particular, the release of models with support for 5G helped Apple to increase sales and become the largest player in the market by the end of the quarter.
So, at the end of the quarter, Apple owns 20.8%. In the fourth quarter of 2019, this company had 17.1% of the market. The second place is occupied by Samsung, whose share decreased from 17.3% to 16.2%. Xiaomi ranks third. The share of this manufacturer increased from 8.0% to 11.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2019. The top five also include Oppo and Huawei, each with 8.9% market share. However, the share of the former increased from 7.5% over the year, while the share of the latter decreased from 14.3%.

If we talk about the results of the year as a whole, Samsung retained the title of the largest smartphone supplier, although its share decreased from 19.2% to 18.8%. In second place is Apple, with a share of 14.8%. In 2019, Apple owned 12.6% of the market. The third place at the end of the year is taken by Huawei. Its share decreased from 15.6% to 13.5%. Rounding out the largest are Xiaomi and Oppo. Compared to 2019, the share of the former increased from 8.2% to 10.8%, and the share of the latter – from 7.7% to 8.3%.
