A survey carried out by CNN reveals that the price of 13 kg of LPG gas in Brazil jumped from R$69.74 in January 2020 to R$102.40 in the first month of 2022. This is an approximate increase of 50% in the cost of the product to the consumer in just two years.
The report used data from the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) as a basis. The price of LPG is composed of state and federal taxes, distribution cost and the margin charged by Petrobras.
In a calculation carried out at the request of CNN, the professor at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), Joelson Sampaio, points out that the value of the gas cylinder currently represents 8.4% of the Brazilian minimum wage, which was readjusted to R$ 1,212.00 in 2022 by the federal government.
The economist also enumerated the economic factors that caused the increase in the cost of the product over the last two years. However, he highlighted Petrobras’ pricing policy as the main reason for the price spike.
In 2020, the amount collected by the state-owned company was R$ 27.79 per cylinder. Two years later, the amount collected by the company is R$ 50.87 – an increase of 83%. Sought by CNN, the oil company has not yet commented.
“The main components that explain this increase are the cost of oil in the international market, the appreciated dollar and the freight of oil to the refineries. But the highlight is the cost of the input on the foreign market, which makes Petrobras charge a very high price for the product. In this way, the increases end up being passed on by the company with an effect on the entire national market”, said the FGV professor.
The Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), released this Wednesday (9), pointed to a 0.73% drop in the incidence of inflation in bottled gas in January, after a 19-month high.
Despite this, the president of the National Union of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Distributors (Sindigás), Sérgio Bandeira de Mello, believes in stability in the price of LPG. For him, there should not be a drop in values for the consumer over the next few months.
“The pressure on LPG prices has been high for the past two years. Always rising price. I do not call the IBGE data a fall, it is at most a stabilization. And, finally, let’s point out that LPG is an essential product, it’s not something that people can’t buy, it’s very expensive”, said the president of Sindigás.
