President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia will soon demand from “unfriendly” countries to pay for fuel in rubles.raising concerns about a possible gas supply crisis in Europe.
Putin has instructed Russia’s central bank and Gazprom to prepare a payment mechanism by March 31, amid Western sanctions against Russia over its “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Countries in the European Union, which supplies about 40% of it natural gas from Gazprom, have persisted in their refusal to pay for Russian gas in rubles.
“Gazprom… is indeed working on an alternative to the complete cessation of gas supplies to ‘unfriendly’ countries and is assessing the consequences of such measures”the article reported, according to Reuters and the Athens News Agency.
According to Kommersant, Gazprom refused to discuss the matter with the newspaper.
