The flow of Russian gas to Germany via the Yamal-Europe pipeline changed direction on Tuesday, after it stopped earlier in the day, according to data from the German pipeline network operator Gascade.
According to Reuters, the management of flow levels and their direction on the Yamal-Europe pipeline is carried out according to customer requests. Flows west through it had been down since Saturday, sending European gas spot prices to record levels.
The eastbound flows – that is, the transport of gas from Germany to Poland – started from the Mallnow terminal at the German-Polish border, Gascade said.
Earlier, applications for eastward flows were recorded with an hourly volume of more than 1,250,000 kilowatt hours (kWh / h) for the rest of Tuesday.
The change in flows is likely to reflect lower orders from German buyers due to the holiday season, said Katja Yafimava, a senior fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, according to Bloomberg. The reduction in supplies to Germany will force Europe to continue to withdraw gas at high rates from its already depleted reserves.
It is noted that the Dutch gas contract increased to 162 euros / MWh at noon on Tuesday, marking an increase of 10% and recording a new record high.
The British contract also climbed to a new all-time high, at λί 4 per unit temperature.
Gazprom did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters, and also noted that on Tuesday, it did not “close” any export capacity through the Yamal pipeline for the rest of the day.
