GasBrasiliano and Usina Cocal start operating the 1st biomethane gas pipeline in Brazil

A partnership between GasBrasiliano and Usina Cocal started the operation of the first exclusive gas pipeline for the transport of biomethane in Brazil, which starts supplying industrial activities in the region of Presidente Prudente (SP), the companies informed in a note this Thursday (2) .

With a total investment of R$ 180 million, the project has approximately 65 km of distribution network, which connects the Cocal plant, in Narandiba, to the industrial consumer market, in Presidente Prudente.

The project’s capacity is up to 25,000 cubic meters per day of biomethane, produced from the processing of noble sugarcane residues, such as vinasse, straw and filter cake.

Of the total invested, R$ 30 million were committed to building the distribution network and R$ 150 million to building the biogas plant for the production of biomethane, according to the companies.

“Biomethane is a green gas that represents one more contribution, in addition to ethanol, in favor of the environment”, said in a note the CEO of Cocal, Paulo Zanetti.

“We obtained all authorizations for the commercialization of this source of clean energy and now, together with GasBrasiliano, we have begun to supply the Presidente Prudente region via an isolated gas pipeline network.”

With the start of operations, Liane Alimentos, the first customer of the gas pipeline, was able to reinforce its goals for reducing emissions, said its industrial director, Maurício Calvo, in a note.

Until August 2022, Liane’s energy matrix was divided into 70% conventional electricity, 10% liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and 20% BPF oil (oil derived from petroleum).

“With the arrival of piped biomethane, the goal is to reach 30% of the matrix in bioenergy already in 2023”, said Calvo, pointing out that the company also has the goal of zeroing the emission of pollutants by 2025.
