Gasoline drops almost 11% in Brazil in August, says survey

Gasoline prices retreated, on average, 10.93% in August in Brazil compared to July, showed a survey released by ValeCard this Monday (29).

The average value of fuel in the country was R$ 5,666 between the 1st and 25th of August, according to the survey.

The biggest drops were registered in Piauí (-16.37%), Rio Grande do Norte (-14.86%) and Sergipe (-14.46%).

Among the capitals, Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul, registered the lowest average value per liter in the month, R$ 5.208, followed by Goiânia (R$ 5.244) and Porto Alegre (R$ 5.317).

In addition to the tax exemption in effect since the end of June, the decline for the second consecutive month is due to the reduction in prices at Petrobras refineries, said the CEO of Benefits and Fleet of ValeCard, José Ortigosa, in a note.

Since July 20, the oil company has reduced the price of gasoline for distributors three times, totaling an accumulated reduction of 13% in the period.

With the decline in gasoline, the average price of hydrous ethanol in the country fell by 8.78% compared to the previous month, to R$ 4.020 per liter.

Due to the sharper drop in the price of gasoline, ethanol remained unattractive in almost all states for fueling vehicles.

“Like what happened in July, in August this option was only worth it, in terms of cost, for supplying the state of Mato Grosso.”
