Gasoline prices likely to continue downward trend, says former IBP president

In an interview with CNN , this Sunday (4), the former president of the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP) Eberaldo Almeida said that gasoline prices should follow the downward trend. According to the expert, the decrease in demand for fuel in the United States is one of the main factors that explain the movement.

“In the case of gasoline, if nothing extraordinary happens, the tendency is that [o preço] keep downloading. What we see going forward is, in fact, a reduction in demand. In other words, demand has been a big factor in signaling price, more than supply”.

For the tenth consecutive week, the value of gasoline at pumps across the country showed a further decrease. According to data from the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), released on Friday (2), the average price of fuel dropped from R$5.25 to R$5.17, a decrease of 1.5 %. The last time the price of gasoline was at this level was in the last week of February 2021.

Almeida detailed that the war in Ukraine and inflation in the US made American families save, resulting in a lower demand for fuel and, consequently, a greater stock, reducing the price.

“A normalization in the American market is already expected. In other words, that peak did not occur, this reflects in a surplus in fuel and a drop in price. And what Brazil is doing is following the price on the international market,” he said.
