Gastronomy in Miami: Daniela Filomeno delivers the restaurants of the moment

Blue water beaches, warm temperatures most of the year, vibrant nightlife and a pulsating arts scene. so it is Miami, one of the largest and most visited cities in the Florida, which still has an extra spice: it is a stronghold of good gastronomy.

On the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, the city presents us with diverse and refined cuisines, in which we always have news and delicious surprises. With open US borders for us Brazilians, I was able to experience a range of new and trendy Miami restaurants, including contemporary, Asian, Italian, Mexican and even rooftops, sophisticated houses and others more funky.

be in the neighborhood Wynwood, where news keep popping up among the street art, no Design District or even in the famous South Beach, the houses I visited opened recently, between six months and a year, and have already given rise to a buzz in the city’s gastronomic scene.

As one of our favorite North American destinations, I share my experiences among the city’s news – valuable tips on where to eat and drink well for your next trip to the U.S:

Forte by chef Adrianne

Coral Gables, on the other side of Miami, is full of nice restaurants. And one of them is the new Forte by Chef Adrianne, an Italian-accented house that wants to bring the air of a Tuscan village to this side of the United States. Very spacious, the place is charming, has exposed bricks on the walls and is led by chef Adrianne Calvo, who has at least two more restaurants in Miami.

The Forte’s menu includes great stars from the Emilia Romagna region of northern Italy, such as Cacio e Pepe, a good bolognese and a neat seven-layer lasagna. I also tried the good old carbonara, which here has guanciale and egg yolk on top – delicious!

Interesting is that, in addition to the Italian origin in the vein, the service is also well done: the waiters, for example, cut rosemary and herbs in front of us to put them fresh in the oil.

dōma Restaurant

THE dōma is in Wynwood, one of Miami’s hippest and hippest neighborhoods that’s been buzzing with new things. Inspired by the Mediterranean and southern Italian cuisine, the Italian restaurant contrasts with the surrounding neighborhood: it is more sophisticated in the midst of a more sophisticated region. cool.

The menu features classic Italian cuisine and modern choices, such as homemade gnocchi with prawns and burrata, tagliarini with black truffle, butter and Parmesan cheese, and spaghetti with clams, calamari carpaccio and porcini mushroom emulsion.

Minister

THE Minister is a very attractive Mexican restaurant that is also located in Wynwood. First of all, I highly recommend the house Margaritas: the classic brings mezcal or tequila with orange liqueur and lemon juice. The food is also delicious, like the ceviche with guacamole, the fish tacos and the quesadillas, enchiladas and salads.

Interesting is that we can see the coming and going of the kitchen, as it is open, as well as the more than 500 bottles of mezcal and tequila scattered on the shelves of the bar. With indoor and outdoor spaces, the Bakan experience focuses on certain elements of Mexican cuisine that date back to pre-Hispanic times.

R House Wynwood

It is right in front of Bakan and also has its facade painted by murals and graffiti, common by Wynwood. THE R House it’s for those who like a little mess, as it’s busier and brunch is rounded off by lively performances by talented drag queens – many of them straight out of the famous Emmy-winning competition “RuPaul’s Drag Race”.

The show is very cool and beyond fun, being a delicious tip to relax with friends. The food, of course, is also delicious: there are drinks, hamburgers, salad, fried chicken with a spicy coriander sauce, among others.

In addition to brunch, the place is also open for dinner – among the larger dishes there is even a Brazilian moqueca, made with local fish, Florida shrimp, scallops, ginger, garlic, peppers, tomato, coconut milk and palm oil.

Hiyakawa Miami

THE Hiyakawa is a Japanese restaurant that aims to be traditional but with a touch of modernity. The decor is minimalist and consists of wooden panels arranged like large wavy rings.

With the use of very fresh fish, the house does an exquisite job with the food, in which, from the kitchen, nigiris, sashimi, temakis, omakase (tasting menu) and other traditional dishes come out very well done. It is important to note that the dishes also follow the seasonality of the ingredients.

Uchi

Miami has many famous Asian restaurants, and the Uchi is another one of them. Also located in Wynwood, it is simple and at the same time funky, worth a visit.

Led by award-winning chef Tyson Cole, in addition to the tasting menu, the place serves good sushi, sashimi, a selection of bluefin and various side dishes.

It is worth mentioning that the original house is in Austin, Texas, in a charming renovated home – in Japanese, uchi means “house”.

Carbone

THE Carbone is already a well-known name in the New York food scene: the branch is the darling of celebrities and has a Michelin star. Landing in Miami, the house brings the same Italian essence to the table.

The couvert comes with a delicious tomato foccacia and, among the main orders, the rigatoni à la vodka is a top choice. The breaded steak is equally amazing and options like tortellini al ragu, lobster ravioli and clams linguine are some of the pastas we find both in Miami and in New York.

The restaurant on the famous Collins Avenue has indoor and outdoor environments and a neat decor, with softer lights, mirrors, lampshades and chandeliers. Bombada, the place has busy tables, so the tip is to make reservations well in advance.

Cote

Like Carbone, the Cote it is yet another house imported from New York and which has a Michelin star in Manhattan. The restaurant is very popular and serves delicious Korean barbecue, combining the creations with the characteristics of classic American barbecue.

The restaurant serves 45-day dry-aged beef – typically found at high-end steakhouses – in a barbecue format that is prepared at the table on smokeless grills. The menu features a variety of prime cuts and American wagyu, in which the dishes are served with pickled vegetables.

One of the most famous requests, in addition to the tasting menu, is the “Butcher’s Feast”, which features a selection of cuts chosen by the chef along with vegetables and kimchi, egg souffle, stews and rice.

Thousands

New and super-agitated, the Thousands is in the heart of South Beach, an area with lively nightlife and famous restaurants. The house is a mix of rooftop with a bar, it is filled with plants and round wooden tables. The cuisine is inspired by the coasts of the Mediterranean and Japan, a combination called by the team “MediterrAsian”.

Dishes are served in the informal manner of izakayas, which can be shared with friends and family. King crab and wagyu carpaccio are among the signatures, as is a whole sea bass, salmon and selection of sushi, sashimi and nigiris are also part of the menu.
