Gaza attacks leave at least 50 dead, Palestinian officials say

Israeli forces clashed with Hamas-led fighters in several parts of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday (16), and Palestinian health officials said at least 50 people had been killed in Israeli shelling.

The Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas has accused Israel of stepping up attacks in Gaza to try to derail efforts by Arab and U.S. mediators to reach a ceasefire deal. Israel says it is trying to eliminate Hamas fighters.

In Rafah, on the southern border where Israeli forces have been operating since May, five Palestinians were killed in an airstrike on a home. In nearby Khan Younis, a man, his wife and two children were killed, according to health officials.

Later on Tuesday (16), an Israeli airstrike on a car killed at least 17 Palestinians and wounded 26 others in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, officials said.

The airstrike occurred near a tent area housing displaced families on Attar Street, the Health Ministry said.

In the historic Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, at least four Palestinians were killed in separate shelling and airstrikes, medics said. An Israeli airstrike killed four people in Sheikh Zayed in northern Gaza, they said.

Hours later, an Israeli airstrike on a school in Nuseirat camp killed 16 people and wounded many others, health officials said. The strike hit a U.N.-run school housing displaced families, the ministry said.

The Israeli military said troops were continuing “intelligence-based” activities in Rafah, and that airstrikes targeted Hamas militants, tunnels and other military infrastructure.

The Israeli Air Force struck about 40 targets across the enclave, including observation and sniper posts, military structures and buildings rigged with explosives.

The armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, a Hamas ally, said their fighters attacked Israeli forces in several locations with anti-tank rockets and mortar shells.

Islamic Jihad’s armed wing said it fired missiles at Sderot in southern Israel. There were no reports of deaths or serious damage.

Israel has vowed to eradicate Hamas after its militants killed 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages in an attack on southern Israeli communities on Oct. 7, according to Israeli records.

More than 38,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive, according to health officials in Gaza, much of which has been devastated. Israel also says 326 of its soldiers have been killed in Gaza.
