Discussions to try to finalize the Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal will continue in the coming days, a US official said on Sunday (25).
“High-level talks in Cairo over the past few days, including with representatives of Hamas and Israel, were constructive and conducted in a spirit of all sides seeking to reach a final and enforceable agreement,” a U.S. official said.
“The process will continue in the coming days through working groups to further address remaining issues and details,” he said.
The talks ended on Sunday without a resolution, with Hamas continuing to publicly suggest it would not agree to a proposal aimed at bridging remaining differences. The group has insisted it will only agree to the plan previously backed by U.S. President Joe Biden.
About the negotiations
On Thursday (22), the US and Egypt met with Israel to try to close remaining gaps and clarify issues in the text of the proposal, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The US and Egypt met again on Friday (23) to discuss and prepare for high-level talks this weekend.
On Saturday (24), Qatar and Egypt met with senior Hamas representatives and went through each paragraph of the proposal in detail to identify any issues or points that still need to be clarified, the source said.
The source did not elaborate on the pending issues, but the CNN reported that the presence of Israeli forces in the Philadelphia corridor, a region along the border with Egypt, is among the main issues still under dispute.
