The devastated largest city of Gaza appealed for international support to help restore basic services after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into force after more than 15 months of war.
More than 70% of roads in Gaza City have been destroyed, and 60% of residents have no water supply, the local government said on Monday (20).
“The priorities of the first phase are to restore life in the city, guarantee services and reopen the streets,” Gaza City said.
The local government said it had sent a list of needs to international organizations and asked that “ample” quantities of fuel be allowed.
“We call on international organizations with relevant experience to cooperate with us and provide services and tools,” he said. “Rescue operations are linked to the input of technical assistance and maintenance tools.”
Reconstruction in Gaza will be a huge and time-consuming undertaking.
About 92% of homes in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged, and more than 1.8 million people are in urgent need of emergency shelter and essential household items, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated in a recent report.
