Civil Defense in Gaza estimates that around 10,000 bodies are trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings in Gaza.
“We have been working with simple equipment for months, which takes time and effort,” said spokesman Mahmoud Bassal on Saturday (12). The group claims that Israel has destroyed 70 to 80% of Civil Defense capabilities.
Civil Defense and medics are the first responders after Israeli airstrikes and work to rescue survivors and recover bodies when they are able to reach the sites of the attacks.
“We demand that the United Nations and humanitarian groups intervene immediately to allow in the necessary rescue equipment so that we can continue our work, recover those missing beneath the rubble and provide the fuel needed to operate civil defense vehicles,” he said. Bassal.
Forty days after the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the vicinity of the Al-Shifa medical complex, “Civil Defense and medical personnel are still recovering bodies buried by Israeli occupation forces in mass graves,” Bassal added.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza said on Wednesday (8) that medical teams discovered a third mass grave in the Al-Shifa compound. The Israeli military has denied any involvement in the burials.
