Gaza: Israel carried out raids after ceasefire came into force

LAST UPDATE: 08.08.2022, 00:27

The issue of the truce between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization, which came into effect at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday after mediation by Egypt, is developing into a thriller.

And this is because, as announced by the Israeli army, an alarm was signaled for the launch of rockets in southern Israel. Earlier, the Israeli army announced that it was carrying out raids in the Gaza Strip after the ceasefire came into force at 11.30pm.

“In response to the firing of rockets against Israeli territory, the army is currently hitting a large number of targets belonging to the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip,” said the army’s statement sent at 11.33pm.

The development shows how fragile the truce between the two sides is after three days of heavy fighting, marking the worst flare-up of violence between Israel and the Palestinian Authority since May 2021.

It is noted that Egypt called for a truce from 23.30 between Israel and the armed Palestinian organization Islamic Jihad, as announced by an official of the Egyptian security services.

“Egypt calls on all sides for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip from 23:30 local time,” the Egyptian official said.

Immediately after his announcement, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group said it would cease hostilities from now on, in line with the Egyptian appeal, but stressed its right to respond to any new Israeli attack.

This was followed later by Israel’s announcement which also confirmed the truce coming into force from 23.30. Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s office said it was “able to confirm that a ceasefire will be implemented tonight at 11:30 p.m. If the ceasefire is violated, the State of Israel reserves the right to respond strongly,” the statement said, thanking to Egypt for its mediation.
