The Gaza Strip’s main medical facility, Al-Shifa Hospital, only has enough fuel to run its generators for at most another 24 hours, the MoH said.Doctors Without Borders (MSF) this Thursday (19).
“Without electricity, many patients will die,” said Guillemette Thomas, medical coordinator for MSF Palestine, based in Jerusalem.
Thousands of people have been injured in Gaza since October 7 as a result of Israeli airstrikes in response to terrorist attacks by the radical Islamic group Hamas.
“I believe these people are at serious risk of dying in the next few hours because it is becoming impossible to get medical care,” Thomas said.
She warned that patients in intensive care (ICU), neonatology (newborns) and those on respiratory support machines are at a higher risk of death.
“Patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cancer, and pregnant women are also at risk due to the general shortage of medicines,” explained the doctor.
Al Shifa hospital – where MSF has been caring for burn patients for years – is one of the few places left in Gaza with electricity.
Currently, the unit is also treating victims of the explosion at the Al Alhi Baptist hospital, in northern Gaza, last Tuesday (17).
Thousands of Palestinians are also sheltering in Al-Shifa hospital, having gone there seeking safe refuge from constant shelling, Thomas said.
MSF said it is vital that hospitals are back up and running and that regular ceasefires are ensured so that fuel and medicine can be brought to these health facilities.
