Gazprom abandons German arm and subsidiaries in Britain, Switzerland and Singapore

Russian energy giant Gazprom has announced that it has abandoned its arm in Germany, which owns several storage facilities across the country, as well as its commercial arm in the United Kingdom. The company is still leaving, as he said, its units from Switzerland to Singapore.

The Russian state-owned company is no longer the owner of Gazprom Germania and all the units it controls, including London-based Gazprom Marketing & Trading, but did not disclose in a statement who owns the property.

The British subsidiary said it could not comment on its new ownership scheme, but added that it was working with British regulator Ofgem to reduce the risk to the UK energy market.

Gazprom’s subsidiaries in Europe have come under intense pressure as customers and business partners following Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

The German government, according to sources in the Bloomberg agency, is considering its options for Wingas – part of Gazprom Germany which supplies gas to 20% of the German market.

The British government is planning to nationalize Gazprom Energy, a Gazprom Marketing & Trading unit that supplies about 20% of the UK market, to protect British customers.

Gazprom Marketing & Trading is facing liquidity problems as banks delay the settlement of its transactions and partners refuse to negotiate with it.

The German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Thursday that Germany was also considering nationalizing or even expropriating Gazprom’s German subsidiaries, citing government sources in Berlin.
