Gazprom cut gas supplies to Germany by 60% in two days

Russian energy company Gazprom continued to reduce the volume of gas it supplies to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to 67 million cubic meters per day early this morning.

The new reduction in gas supplies came after the company had announced the day before yesterday, Tuesday, that it would reduce the maximum daily amount of gas supplies to 100 million cubic meters, from 167 million cubic meters.

Overall, the latest cut represents a reduction of about 60% in gas supplies to Germany in just two days.

Siemens Energy announced on Tuesday that one of the Nord Stream 1 gas turbines, which had recently been repaired in Canada, could not be shipped from Montreal at this time due to sanctions imposed on Russia. Nord Stream 1 is the main pipeline through which gas supplies are made to Germany.

Gazprom, which has a majority in the Russian state, has cited delays in repairing the compressor plant as the reason for deliveries of reduced volumes of gas, although the relevant German agency has disputed this claim.

The German finance minister accused Russia of trying to raise concerns and increase gas prices with the move, but added that it was still possible to market alternative gas supplies, but at a high price. German gas storage facilities are about 56% full, he said.

In a message last night, Robert Hubeck called on the public to save energy. “Now is the time to do it. Every kilowatt hour helps in this situation,” he said.

Although the situation is serious, energy supply in Germany is not in danger, he added.
