Gazprom: ‘Impossible’ to receive the Nord Stream turbine due to sanctions

The standoff over the delivery of the Nord Stream gas pipeline turbine continues unabated, as just hours after Solz said the component was ready with the necessary documents to return to Russia, Gazprom argued that Western sanctions made it impossible its receipt.

In particular, in a statement the state-controlled Russian energy giant states that “the sanctions regime in Canada, the EU, and the United Kingdom and the inconsistency of the current situation with existing contractual obligations on the part of Siemens make it impossible to deliver engine 073 to Portovaya CS “.

Earlier today the German chancellor had stated that “it’s quite clear and simple. The turbine is here and it can be delivered. All you have to do is say that someone wants it and then it will be delivered very quickly. All the necessary documents are ready and there is no reason to don’t let this tradition happen”.

Mr. Soltz was even photographed in front of the turbine, while he described the Russian side’s excuses as politically motivated.

“The restriction of the supply of natural gas seems to have more political motives”, the German chancellor had said, adding that in the future one should also consider that “there can always be any alleged problems so that something does not work”.

Even after the delivery of the turbine, Germany must be prepared for possible such “problems”, he had said.

A spokesman for Siemens Energy also said today that the turbine, which was repaired at the company’s facilities in Canada and sent to Germany for delivery to Gazprom, is only one of a total of six larger and two smaller turbines used in Nord Stream 1.

However, for the operation of the pipeline at 100% of its potential, only the five turbines are sufficient.

At the moment, however, the pipeline is operating at 20% of the total output and, as the Siemens representative explained, there is no information as to why a higher output is not technically possible.

According to him, the necessary customs and travel documents for the shipment of the turbine are ready, but some elements are still missing from the Russian side.
