Russian energy giant Gazprom is considering options to cut off gas supplies to “unfriendly” countries and their possible consequences, according to a report in the Russian newspaper Kommersant today, citing anonymous sources.
President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia will soon demand from “unfriendly” countries to pay for fuel in rubles, raising concerns about a possible crisis in gas supplies to Europe.
Putin has instructed Russia’s central bank and Gazprom to prepare a payment mechanism by March 31, amid Western sanctions against Russia over its “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Countries in the European Union, which supplies about 40 percent of its gas from Gazprom, have insisted on refusing to pay for Russian gas in rubles.
“Gazprom … is indeed working on an alternative to the complete cessation of gas supplies to ‘unfriendly’ countries and is assessing the consequences of such measures,” the report said.
According to Kommersant, Gazprom refused to discuss the matter with the newspaper.
Russia will not immediately ask other countries to pay in rubles for gas imports, the Kremlin announced yesterday.
